About this event

Join a unique walking tour with researchers from the University of Cambridge, asking questions about the city landscape and its complex past. This introductory tour covers a range of ‘uncomfortable’ topics, from the tensions between town and gown, to the lasting legacies of empire, the effects of racial, gender, and class discrimination, and the modern controversies surrounding these histories.

We ask questions such as:

  • What should we do with controversial statues?
  • How should nations teach their histories?
  • Who has access to university education in Cambridge?

Tour details:

  • 1.5 hours (approx. 30 minutes of walking)
  • Tour starts and ends in the city centre (meeting location confirmed upon booking)
  • Mostly flat terrain, but with some cobblestoned streets. No steps but one ramp on/off a bridge.
  • Content note: the tour will include discussions of violence, enslavement, colonialism, discrimination, and suicide.
